Emily Phipps & Gaio crowned the SEIB Rescue Horse Champions

Published: 02-Aug-2017

Congratulations to Emily Phipps & Gaio winners of the inaugural SEIB Rescue Horse Championship who are competing in the Show Jumping at the 2017 SEIB Trailblazers Championships. Emily found Gaio at a market which is where their inspiring story started, overcoming a number of obstacles to get to where they are today and reach this year’s SEIB Trailblazers Championships at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire.

Guy (Gaio) has had a very traumatic time over the last few years. Emily bought Guy from a livestock market in Melton Mowbray and he was the best chance I ever took.

When Emily brought him home she began working from the ground up, working through a lot of issues including a chronic rearing problem and being scared of, well, practically everything!

During this time he was coming along extremely well, however to add to the complications a field accident resulted in a broken front leg and a raging infection. For sometime it was touch and go and there was no guarantee that he would ever come sound let alone jump again, but to Emily’s surprise he bounced back with a vengeance and within 6 months he was back in ridden work and coming on leaps and bounds.

But at the beginning of 2017 year we had a scare with the dreaded S word and had 4 weeks of isolation before being given the all clear. Guy has gone from strength to strength over the last 5 months and at the grand old age of 21 he has qualified for the SEIB Trailblazers Championship.

‘From a quirky little Danish warmblood that resembled a hat rack walking around a small collecting ring in an auction environment to, well still a quirky warmblood but with a job to do who is loving life and jumping out his skin.’

‘I know I am biased but he has been the best decision that I have ever made when buying a horse, he tries his heart out for me and owes me absolutely nothing it’s a honour to be here competing at the final and I’m looking forward to every fence,’ said a delighted Emily Gibson.

As title sponsor, SEIB Insurance Brokers wanted award those who have had a difficult journey to the Championships. The competition enjoyed an unprecedented response from competitors which quickly prompting the judges to choose two winner’s.

The winning combination will receive their prize at special presentation during the SEIB Trailblazers Championships at Stoneleigh Park 2 - 5 August.
